Sometimes it seems that the relationship between Swiss watches and the British luxury automotive industry dates back almost to the invention of the internal combustion engine. For example, the tie-up between Jaeger-LeCoultre and Aston Martin happened in the Twenties. Unlike today, however, this had nothing to do with marketing. Rather, the economic chaos of WWI had forced so many watchmakers to diversify from their core business. This is why Jacques-David LeCoultre and his partners at Jaeger opened the Ed Jaeger London Ltd workshop that by 1925 had come to specialise in dashboard instruments - including, from the Thirties onwards, Aston Martin's.

A Lange & Söhne
When the quiet kings of Saxon horology wanted to ensure their Grand Lange 1 was a little “grander”, they didn’t simply beef up the case and put in a heftier movement. Instead, a new calibre was developed that enables the four displays – time, small seconds, power reserve and trademark big date – to be opened out for a crisper, clearer look. The date was enlarged proportionally and is now the most imposing and legible on any Lange wristwatch.
Watch of the collection
If the standard Grand Lange 1 is big, then the tourbillon, perpetual calendar version is big and very, very clever. Keep it running and you won’t need to adjust the date until the year 2100. The price of such convenience? £234,200.
Gucci Guilty Black
As if the recent Frank "Sin City" Miller ads for Gucci Guilty weren't dark enough, the Italian fashion house has given their fragrance a new edition: Black. However despite the rather ominous name the scent itself is surprisingly light: notes of fresh coriander, neroli and cedarwood are punched through with Gucci's signature essence patchouli, with a burst of aphrodisiac orange flower in case things get heavy. If they do, rest assured the black and signature Gucci-green bottle will look impressive standing on your bedside table as you throw down your silver collar stiffeners and cufflnks. The guilt you might feel the next morning we can't help you with.

That cast list sums up the broad appeal of the original luxury 4x4, which this fourth-generation seeks to extend with a technical breakthrough: it’s the world’s first SUV with an all-aluminium body. That helps make it some 350 kilos lighter than the outgoing model, with Land Rover claiming commensurate improvements in acceleration, economy, emissions and agility.
